Chapter Seven

The next morning, Laura couldn’t wait to get to City Farm. She wolfed down her breakfast and was ready long before her mum, so she sat at the kitchen table waiting impatiently.

‘What a difference a day makes!’ Mum commented.

‘I know. I’m so glad you made me go back,’ said Laura happily. ‘I can’t wait to finish off all my labels. I’ve done most of them but I think I can add some more. I expect Silky will come with me – she followed me around all day yesterday! She’s so cute.’

‘Silky’s that tabby cat, isn’t she?’ asked her mum. Laura could hear that she was pulling clothes out of the washing machine.

‘Yes. She’s like my shadow,’ said Laura. ‘She trots at my feet and every now and again I feel her touching me, as though she wants me to know she’s still there.’

‘Aw, that’s lovely,’ said her mum. ‘Hang on a tick, sweetheart. This won’t take me long.’

Laura tapped her cane on the kitchen floor, writing imaginary Braille labels while her mum sorted out the washing. She knew she had to be patient, but she didn’t want to be late. She had so much to do!

At last her mum was ready, and they set off for City Farm.

‘Have a lovely day, honey!’ said her mum, as Laura got out of the car.

Laura waved, then tapped her way eagerly to the barn.

‘Morning, Laura,’ Kerry greeted her. ‘You’re early!’

‘Early! Really? I thought I was late!’

Kerry laughed. ‘No. You’re ten minutes before time.’

‘Oh, well, that’s OK then,’ Laura replied cheerfully. ‘Have you seen Silky this morning?’

‘Not yet,’ said Kerry. ‘I expect she’s still out hunting. She doesn’t come into the barn much, though she’s been coming in more since you arrived! Would you like a drink of something while you’re waiting for the others?’

‘No thanks, I’ve just had my breakfast,’ said Laura. ‘Maybe I’ll go and check on all the signs I put up yesterday. It’ll be good to see if I can find my way around.’

‘That’s the spirit,’ said Kerry. ‘It shows you’re feeling more confident already. You’ve come a long way just in the short time you’ve been here, Laura. Do you realize that?’

Laura thought about the disaster of her first day, and how different her second day had been. ‘I guess I have,’ she agreed.

‘And that’s what we were hoping for,’ Kerry continued. ‘You’ve been through so much in the last few months. I know it hasn’t been easy.’

‘No.’ Laura hesitated. ‘It’s been awful. I used to be so good at everything.’

She heard Kerry leave her desk, then walk towards her and take hold of her hands. ‘And you still can be good at everything, Laura. You can do anything you set your mind to. That’s what we want you to learn, here at City Farm.’

Laura listened, thinking about it. Things were getting easier. She’d certainly started to enjoy life more. ‘Thanks, Kerry,’ she said. ‘I guess I have to keep on trying.’

‘Yes. And the more you try, the more you’ll be able to do.
